Harvesting Happiness: Overcoming Disappointment

By Lisa Cypers Kamen.

How can you overcome disappointment? Here are a few simple things that you can try:

Get rid of the evidence. Even the greatest thinkers and influential people faced rejection and disappointment. For example, Walt Disney was fired from his first job and look what he did later in life!

Einstein failed some of his early classes, and was told by teachers he wasn’t intelligent because he daydreamed too much. In fact, he was daydreaming about the theories he would later change the world with—but the naysayers in his life couldn’t see that!

Stay in the mud. What does that mean? A Buddhist proverb says, “The lotus flower blooms most beautifully from the deepest and thickest mud,” so some of the most beautiful things come from what seems to be the most unlikely places.

Find the pearl of wisdom in your disappointments. Make the most of what happens and grab that pearl of wisdom from your experience.

Ignore those who are critiquing you. Remember that success is one percent natural talent and 99 percent hard work.

Grow your roots. We can be strong if we have strong roots. Find people who give you strength in life.

Don’t give up, be persistent. Remember this quote, “The greatest oak was once a little nut who held its ground.” – Author Unknown

Take your time and don’t rush. Be like the butterfly, who grows its wings strongly by making its way through a small hole.

Get inside your “bubble” and use it as a protection. Ignore skeptics and critics who say that things happen for a reason.

You can be big. Ann Landers once wrote, “Expect trouble as an inevitable part of life, and when it comes, hold your head high. Look it squarely in the eye, and say, ‘I will be bigger than you. You cannot defeat me.’”
